Songs and rhymes

Singing and rhyming play a significant part in nursery and reception.

"Nursery rhymes provide bite-sized learning opportunities for young children to develop key developmental skills and can often be the trigger for hours of creative and open-ended play. They are a powerful learning source in early literacy and enable children to become interested in the rhythm and patterns of language", Professional Association for Childcare and Early Years.

‘We are meant to use our vocal chords not merely as a valve to prevent unwanted bits getting into our air passages but to communicate with others. Language has evolved to carry out this function, but the primary means of vocal expression is the cry, and from that develops the singing voice.’ (Jones, 1999)

Movement patterns

In maths, we have be having a go at verbal patterns.  We have been chanting and dancing as we say different patterns strings.  This was inspired by a Year 2 lesson in Miss. Austins class.  Our favourite has to be Banana Banana Meatball.

'We're Going on a Bear Hunt' by Michael Rosen is a firm favourite in the early years.  It is great to read it but even better to sign it.  You can use this video of Michael Rosen to learn the story at home.
