Year 3 Weekly Update

Weekly Review - Week Beginning - 25.03.2024

Maths:
This week we have been learning about equal and unequal parts and how some parts have different shapes but have the same area. We looked at how squares can be divided into four smaller squares, four triangles and four rectangles. Although it was challenging to start, we used our Dorothy Determined value and we could see how they were the same area despite them being different shapes.

English:
In English this week, we completed our independent write. After studying Roger McGough's poem this half term, we had the opportunity to write our own versions of 'The Colour Collector.' We didn't know we had so many POETS in Year 3. They used the Cally Creative value to help them write the poems and we had different versions such as 'The Book Collector,' 'The Unicorn Collector' and 'The Flag Collector.'

Science:
We had so much fun in our Science lesson this week learning about forces and magnets. It was so confusing but yet so interesting. Did you know not all metals are magnetic? Cobalt, nickel, steel and iron are magnetic but aluminium, gold, silver and copper are not magnetic.
The question is... why? Metals such as cobalt have electrons moving around the atom in the same direction making it magnetic but metals such as aluminium have electrons moving in different directions making it non-magnetic.
We drew mazes on plastic bottles and use a magnet to pull the object on the inside of the bottle in the direction of the maze. We tested different materials such as paperclips, pins and marbles to see which were magnetic and which were non-magnetic.
