Weekly Review
This week has been great! In Science, we explored the life cycle of an amphibian and were lucky enough to spot some tadpoles in our very own pond—such an exciting way to bring our learning to life. In Geography, we learned about the African elephant and its habitat, using our knowledge to create striking silhouette artwork. We also took inspiration from Marco Balich’s Tree of Life in Art, designing and building our own 3D paper trees. What a Cally Creative week!
English
In Writing this week, we have focused on diary entries. At the beginning of the week, we explored the question What is a diary entry? and identified its most important features. We then wrote diary entries about our weekends—Miss McDonald and Miss Clarke loved being a bit nosey and reading all about what we got up to! Using the skills we’d practised, we then applied them to our story Wild. We got into character and thought carefully about how the girl might have been feeling at different points in the story. Our diary entries were descriptive, thoughtful, and full of imagination—we loved stepping into the girl’s 'wild' shoes!
Maths
Continuing our focus on measuring in Maths, this week we explored the skill of estimating. We discovered that the width of our fingernail is roughly 1cm and the distance from the end of our thumb across our palm is about 10cm—helpful tools for making quick estimates! Using this knowledge, we estimated the lengths of different objects around the classroom. We recorded our predictions in tables and then used rulers to measure each object, testing how close our estimates were. It was a fun and practical way to build our measuring confidence!
Phonics
This week we are continuing to review our phase 5 sounds in preparation for phonics screening. This week's sounds have been: u-e /oo/ /yoo/, aw /or/, ea /e/, ir /ur/, ou /ow/. Our tricky words this week are: any, many, who, your and their.
Returning your book – Please return these books inside your child’s reading folder every Monday. If the book is not returned, you will receive one reminder before a £5 fine is issued.
