YEAR 1 WEEKLY REVIEW

Friday 17th January 2025

Weekly Review

Another great week in Year 1! In geography, we continued exploring different communities, focusing on what it’s like to live by the coast and how it compares to our home. In science, we investigated different materials and their properties, thinking about how they are used in the world around us. In art, we worked on mixing colours and created a piece inspired by Colours in Number by Jasper Johns, experimenting with how colours can blend and combine. It’s been a busy and creative week!

English

This week in writing, we continued our focus on the poem When I’m by Myself by Eloise Greenfield. We used our imaginations to create our very own metaphors, thinking about adjectives to describe different nouns. To inspire our work, we immersed ourselves in different sounds and experiences, which helped us come up with unique and thoughtful ideas. We even challenged ourselves to include rhymes in our poems, experimenting with how words can flow and connect.

Maths

In maths this week, we began our exciting new topic, Additive Structures. We have been building on our previous knowledge of partitioning to explore how we can use it to write mathematical expressions. We looked at how objects can be partitioned and represented in different ways, thinking creatively about how to break things down into parts. We also discovered something fascinating—the order of the parts does not change the whole!

Phonics

In phonics this week we have begun learning Little Wandle’s Spring 1 sounds. This week's sounds are: /ee/ y, /e/ ea, /w/ wh, /oa/ oe ou. This week's tricky words are: want, water any, many, again.
